Wisconsin has been suffering the impacts of the trade war since practically day one.
With factories across the state shutting down…
And far too many hardworking Wisconsinites losing their jobs as retaliatory tariffs and boycotts harm American businesses abroad…
2025 has been a tough year for Wisconsin, for sure.

And unfortunately, the pain looks poised to continue.
More specifically, Saputo Cheese USA has announced its Green Bay plant will cease operations in December 2025, with plans to lay off around 240 hardworking employees – just in time for the holidays.
Saputo had originally announced this shutdown in 2023, with the closure to complete by the end of 2024, but ultimately workers were granted a (temporary) reprieve.
The shutdown is part of larger cost pressures squeezing the dairy sector. Rising feed and energy costs are eating into margins. Trade rules and international dairy competition keep pushing U.S. processors into tight spots. And recent ICE raids (and the ripple effects of the fear they instill) have exacerbated a labor shortage that was already causing widespread issues.
Faced with all of these difficulties, it’s no surprise that dairy facilities across the country are now consolidating or relocating to cut overhead – and plenty more are closing outright.
Local businesses around Green Bay are bracing for harsh fallout. For years this cheese plant served as a reliable backbone for downstream suppliers, transport services, and local retail. The loss of that many paychecks will likely ripple throughout neighborhoods, mom-and-pop shops, and local service providers.
To say nothing of the 200+ families that are going to have to scrimp and save through the holidays, because every saved dollar will count for a great deal. After all – this is not exactly a healthy job market.
Please join us in wishing these hardworking Wisconsinites well as they look for new opportunities.
