Intro

If you’re like me, Outback Steakhouse was always more of a “special occasion” kind of place when you were growing up.
Maybe somewhere you got to go if you had a really good report card, or won a district championship, or as a send-off before you had to eat cold hot dogs at camp for a week.
(Maybe your childhood was very different from mine. It’s a mystery!)
That’s because the food’s always been great…and it’s always been pretty pricey as well.
That’s changing now because of Outback’s $14.99 meal deal.

Aussie, Aussie, Aussie

Of course, the quality of the food isn’t changing…but suddenly you can get quite a bit more of it for a very reasonable price:
$14.99 for a three-course meal (soup/salad, an entree, and a dessert).
Not every dish is available with this deal, so let’s talk about what you can get, but first:

Your mileage may vary

I went to my local Outback over the weekend to check out the deal, so I’m working off what’s available locally to me.
Outback doesn’t have a national menu for their $14.99 promotion, because – as they note – the offer may differ some from store to store.
While I’m pretty sure the vast majority of what was available to me will be available to everyone else, it’s possible that one or two things will be switched out.
So your mileage may vary! Although again, I expect it to be pretty similar.
Let’s talk about first course…

Soup / salad

At my local Outback, the offer was for:
– Baked potato soup,
– House salad, or
– Caesar salad
(Sorry, no Bloomin’ Onion here.)
Of course, Outback is smart about this and gives you the option to get a nicer soup / salad for a little more:

Upcharge soup / salad options

– Tasmanian chili (highly recommend, it’s all steak!)
– Blue cheese wedge salad
– French onion soup
^^ These options were $3-$4 extra, just to give you a sense of things.
Ok! On to entrees…

No steak, but still good

The options I saw at my local Outback were:
– Three shrimp dishes (Gold Coast coconut shrimp – yum, crispy breaded shrimp, and grilled shrimp on the barbie – if you’re picking one, go for Gold Coast for sure)
– Bloomin’ burger (so you get a little Bloomin’ Onion with your burger – not a bad thing!)
Of course, if you want steak, there are upcharges. (Are you shocked?)

Pay more, get more

There are two tiers of additional options: $22.49 and $27.49. Let’s dig in.
For $22.49, you can expand to:
– Grilled chicken on the barbie
– Chicken tenders
– 6-oz sirloin
(Please do not pay $22.49 for chicken tenders.)
And for $27.49, you can go all the way up to:
– Bloomin’ fried chicken
– 9-oz sirloin
– Ribs (half rack)

My two cents

The upcharged deals all pencil out; generally the meals in the $22.49 tier are around $20 on their own, and the $27.49 tier are all in the $25-$26ish dollar range, so getting a soup/salad and a dessert for just a couple dollars more makes a lot of sense in theory.
That said, please don’t pay more than $20 for a chicken dish, just on principle.
The steaks, sure, I can understand – the ribs too (esp bc the regular entree is a full rack of ribs). But not the chicken.

Dessert

Your options for dessert are cheesecake, or…cheesecake.
You can top it with either chocolate sauce or raspberry, or you can get the Chocolate Thunder from Down Under (big brownie, big scoop of ice cream, whipped cream and chocolate sauce) for a $3 upcharge.
I’d just get the cheesecake with raspberry, but that’s my two cents!

Summary

So there you have it – everything you need to know about Outback’s $14.99 meal deal.
Again – it’s a good value if you use it right. Just avoid some of the transparently overpriced menu items!
