Intro

If you’re looking to have a nice meal for 500 calories or less, you can do a lot worse than Outback Steakhouse.
They’ve got a lot of options that are actually pretty reasonable when it comes to calories!
(And if you’re not counting, they also have some amazing new dishes I’d highly recommend trying.)
Now please note – I’m not under the impression that calories are the only signifier of health…fat, sugar, protein, and more all come into play.
But if you’re counting calories, I figure 500 for a nice meal out is a good place to start.
Let’s dig in, starting with:

Appetizers

It probably won’t surprise you that the Bloomin’ Onion (pictured) and Aussie cheese fries are quite a bit more than 500 calories.
(They’re at 1,900 and 2,620, respectively.)
Fortunately you do have some options:
– Seared peppered Ahi (440 calories)
– Table bread with butter (370 calories – this one’s a big relief, I felt sure it’d be more before I checked)

Soups

Every soup but the French Onion is under 500 calories. So that means you can get (calories in parenthesis, here and throughout the whole article):
– Baked potato soup (cup – 250, bowl – 450)
– Broccoli soup (cup – 160, bowl – 320)
– Creamy onion soup (cup – 220, bowl – 420)
– Tasmanian chili (cup – 200, bowl – 370)

Salads

Most of the side salads fall under 500 calories; none of the entree salads do. So here are the salad options:
– House side salad (no dressing – 180)
– Caesar side salad (no dressing – 260)
– Blue cheese pecan chopped side salad (with dressing – 440)
And the dressings are all 60-230 calories, so you can mix and match to the house side salad as well while keeping under 500 calories.

Steaks

Most of the bigger steaks are above 500 calories, but there are still a few options available to you:
– Victoria’s filet mignon (6 oz – 480)
– Outback center cut sirloin (6 oz – 340, 8 oz – 400)

Other mains

It won’t surprise you that Outback’s ribs are over 500 calories – but unfortunately so are all their sandwiches and dinner-portioned mains – with one exception:
The lobster tails entree is 490 calories, but of course any side you choose to include will push you over the 500-calorie line.
Speaking of sides…

Side dishes

All the side dishes are under the calorie limit aside from the over the top brussels sprouts, the steakhouse mac & cheese, and the Aussie fries.
So you have these available to you:
– Mixed veggies (120)
– Broccoli (140)
– Green beans (140)
– Mashed potatoes (230)
– Loaded baked potato (340)
– Loaded sweet potato (250)
– Seasoned rice (320)
– Asparagus (60)
Of course, if you’re pairing with a steak, probably best to stick with the asparagus.

Lunch options

Outback has some smaller-portion offerings available for lunch, and a few of them fall under the 500-calorie limit…but of course, these are just the lunch sizes:
– Grilled chicken on the barbie (5 oz – 360)
– Bloomin’ fried chicken (480)
– Center-cut sirloin (6 oz – 340)

Putting it all together

As you can see, Outback has a fair number of options if you’re counting calories and looking for something more delicious than steamed veggies.
But here’s the big question:
What would you like to see on Outback’s menu under 500 calories?
