If you’re struggling to take care of your hair, I 100% get that. I have two small kids at home and no spare time, and it can be SO hard to sort through all the nonsense online to try and figure out what works.
But I’ve done the work to figure out what works, and now you can take advantage of that. Not all hair oils are made equal, and here I’ve picked out just a few of my favorites.
These unique hair growth oils could be the key to unlocking amazing hair. Each has properties designed to help promote hair growth, including one or more of the following:
- Nourishing vitamins to strengthen hair and stimulate follicles;
- Soothing and moisturizing properties to help your scalp (which then helps promote hair growth);
- Antimicrobial properties to help protect your scalp and hair.
My two cents? Combine a few that make the most sense for you into a hair detox or a shampoo like in this easy how-to video:
With that in mind, let’s talk about these amazing hair growth oils. Starting with…
Coconut oil
There’s a reason coconut oil sometimes gets called the “holy grail” of hair care. One of coconut oil’s key benefits is that it can penetrate the hair shaft itself, enhancing its ability to deliver all kinds of benefits throughout your hair. It also has tons of fatty acids and is great both for keeping hair strong and shiny AND for delivering a strong dose of antimicrobial goodness straight to your scalp. As a general rule, you’ll want cold-pressed virgin coconut oil for maximum gain, as processing the coconut oil can reduce some of its many health benefits.
You’ll find coconut oil in plenty of storebought stuff, but in my experience it’s often diluted down to near-uselessness. Instead, I’d recommend trying this SUPER easy DIY coconut oil hair mask recipe to see all the benefits firsthand.
Rosemary oil
You’ll find rosemary in lots of shampoos because it’s able to stimulate hair follicles (which, of course, promotes hair growth). Like coconut oil, rosemary also has anti-inflammatory properties and lots of antioxidants. This means it can help soothe the scalp and improve conditions for your broader hair growth.
The only problem? Many store-bought shampoos dilute the rosemary with tons of chemicals and fillers. (As with most things, the very best quality product is the one you make yourself.) Fortunately, I’ve got a really simple rosemary water recipe you can easily make.
Jojoba oil
Jojoba oil is uniquely good for hydrating and moisturizing your scalp – in fact, its molecular structure is surprisingly similar to the oil our scalps naturally produce all on their own. This means it doesn’t feel nearly as heavy (or as greasy) as other oils can – and thanks to its antimicrobial and general skin cooling properties, jojoba oil is great for promoting scalp health and therefore helping get your hair healthy, luscious, and growing.
Argan oil
Argan oil has tons of antioxidants and a healthy dose of Vitamin E – which makes it a great complement to some of the other oils above (especially coconut and jojoba oils). It’s frequently called “liquid gold” because of all its benefits. My favorite? It helps my hair feel like silk whenever I use it. (It’s also great for smoothing frizzy hair – so if yours takes work to get in line every day, I’d strongly consider argan oil.) And, like many of the other oils on this list, it’s great for scalp health.
Castor oil
Castor oil has tons of ricinoleic acid and Vitamin E, which means it’s essentially tailor-made for boosting hair growth. Because it’s so thick, I’d generally recommend mixing it with a lighter oil (think rosemary, grapeseed, or jojoba oil) so you can spread it more easily. And if you have some left over after oiling your hair, consider this DIY lip gloss for your leftovers!
Almond oil
I LOVE sweet almond oil – it smells amazing and is jam-packed with omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium (which everyone seems to forget but is actually really important for your overall health), and Vitamin E. It’s also a very soothing oil, which is just great for cooling and relaxing your scalp (and the rest of your skin too, while you’re at it).
Tea tree oil
Ok, chances are good you’ve heard lots about tea tree oil wherever you get your hair cut; I feel like it’s promoted on every hair product ever at the salon.
But that’s for good reason. Tea tree oil can actually be used as an antiseptic for minor cuts, and its antifungal properties make it helpful for fighting dandruff. It’s also a potent anti-inflammatory, so it’s great for soothing your scalp and nourishing hair.
