Intro

Pizza Hut has had a long and storied list of amazing dishes over the years.
From the P’zone…to sub sandwiches…pizzas with hot dogs baked into the crust…the triple-decker pizza…they’ve had a lot of really cool concepts.
Most were popular for a while but eventually couldn’t stand the test of time.
Which is a real shame, because…they were awesome.
But as they say…

Intro (continued)

The only constant is change!
But personally, if I were Pizza Hut, and I was gradually losing ground to a series of increasingly impressive competitors…
I’d probably bring some of these dishes back!
For the nostalgia if nothing else.
Sadly, I’m not in charge at Pizza Hut, so I hope you’ll raise a glass with me to some of these incredible dishes that will unfortunately probably never again see the light of day.
Starting with an absolute classic…

Dessert pizza

I give Cici’s a lot of credit for popularizing dessert pizza, but I think Pizza Hut probably did it best.
Depending on the Pizza Hut buffet, you could get a few different flavors – my favorite was sliced apples, cookie crust, streusel topping, walnuts. (Cherry was pretty good too.)

Bigfoot pizza

The Bigfoot pizza debuted in 1993, and, true to its name, it was absolutely massive.
More specifically, it measured two square feet(!) and was the center of a huge marketing push by Pizza Hut.
To be clear, it was like a normal Pizza Hut pizza…just a lot bigger. (Hey, it was the 90s.)
I’d love to have one again just for the shock value of seeing a pizza that size, but unfortunately it’s been gone for nearly three decades now and probably isn’t coming back. (Although to its credit, it made it for almost three years!)
Just another lost treasure from the 90s!

Sicilian lasagna pizza

Like the Bigfoot pizza, this was a big, rectangular, filling pizza…
But instead of being super wide like Bigfoot, this one was depp.
More specifically, the Sicilian lasanga pizza was two crusts (simulating that kind of lasagna feel) filled with Italian sausage, pasta, tons of cheese, and sauce. It was released in 2006 as a limited-time offer, and it unfortunately has not returned to menus since.

Hot dog stuffed crust pizza

This was just genius.
Imagine a pizza…but the crust is mini hot dog rolls with hot dogs stuffed in them. (Either regular or pretzel crust.)
Baked to perfection.
Rip off the hot dogs, dunk them in mustard, then enjoy the pizza.
(I mean, ok, without any more crust, the pizza was a little hard to manage. But still worth the trouble.)
It was released in 2012 in Australia, England, and Canada, and in the USA in 2015 – but unfortunately just did not have the staying power here that it did overseas.

Bacon and cheese stuffed crust pizza

The only thing better than a cheese stuffed crust is putting meat in it too.
I believe Pizza Hut was the first to do this – don’t quote me on that – and it was just as indulgent as you’d imagine.
Now, I freely admit that stuffed crust pizzas are better today, so someone should absolutely bring this one back. It’s been gone since 2014, interrupted by a brief revival in 2016.
I don’t think Pizza Hut is going to, but someone should. Paging Little Caesars!

Stuffed pizza rollers

Think of stuffed pizza rollers as kind of like mini calzones – they were small (think roughly the size of a baked Pillsbury crescent roll) and stuffed with cheese and toppings, plus a marinara sauce for dipping.
The thing that I loved most about them was that you could carry them around at a party. They were more of a finger food than your traditional big sloppy slice of pizza, you know?

The Big Dipper

All else aside, A+ for the name, right? The Big Dipper was called a pizza, and I guess on some level it was one…
It had crust, cheese, toppings. But no sauce.
The Big Dipper was cut up into 24 strips for dipping and included three sauces – honey BBQ, ranch, and marinara – to zest up the meal.
In a lot of ways, it reminds me of some of Little Caesars’ recent pizzas which are half and half pizza and cheesy bread sticks.

The edge pizza

My #1 complaint with most pizzas is the crust – there’s just too much of it!
I’m eating pizza for the toppings and flavors, not the tasteless carbs on the edge.
There are a few ways to solve for this. For example, you can improve the crust (which Domino’s did to great fanfare in the early 2010s).
Pizza Hut’s solution was the edge pizza – with toppings all the way to the edge. It was introduced in 1997 and made a brief comeback in 2021.

Triple decker pizza

As I mentioned earlier…when building a big pizza, you can either go wide or deep.
The triple decker pizza (which is exactly what it sounds like) was probably the purest distillation of the urge to go deep.
Honestly it was hard to get your mouth around a bite because of all the layers.
It was popular – but difficult to prepare, so ultimately Pizza Hut let it lapse.

Summary

So there you have it – nine discontinued Pizza Hut dishes I don’t think we’ll be seeing again.
Which is a shame – because, let’s face it, I’d love some really, REALLY big pizzas to try again!
(And given that I’ve got three kids, well, it’d be nice to only have to order one pizza instead of, like, three. But that’s just me.)
Of course, I’ve gotta know…
