Intro

I cannot tell you how many times I’ve rolled up to a restaurant, expecting to order a longtime favorite dish, only to discover that it’s gone.
It’s usually the reason I came in the first place!
So disappointing when it happens.
And honestly, it feels like Whataburger’s menu has gotten a little less “interesting” over the years. Like they’ve lost something since growing so quickly.
You know?

Continued…

I mean, I would say right now that Whataburger isn’t even the best burger anymore.
Now, all that said – Whataburger does an amazing job with the dishes it offers.
I for one am a big fan of the avocado bacon burger.
And the shakes are just fantastic. (I haven’t tried their breakfast yet, but I hear good things.)

Discontinued dishes

Whataburger HAS retired a lot of dishes over the years.
Some are maybe for the best?
Some are definitely NOT!
Here are nine that are on my mind:

#1: Mushroom Swiss Burger

If you love mushrooms – and I do, while also acknowledging that I get that they’re polarizing – this was absolutely the burger for you.
Two patties, au jus sauce, heaps of mushrooms, two slices of Swiss cheese.
Tons of fans were disappointed.
Hopefully management will hear them and reverse course at some point!

#2: Chop House Cheddar Burger

The Chop House Cheddar Burger was originally unveiled in 2009 to great fanfare.
In addition to your standard two burger patties, it also had shredded cheddar cheese (not sliced), two slices of bacon, plus grilled onions and steak sauce.
(It was also originally just $4.69 for the burger on its own – an amazing value, especially compared to today’s prices.)

#3: A1 Thick & Hearty Burger

Like the Chop House burger, the A1 Thick & Hearty had plenty of sauce and grilled onions – but unlike Chop House, the A1 burger had three slices of bacon (instead of two) and a slice of American cheese in between the two standard beef patties.
A1 Thick & Hearty was originally released in 1998 and was re-released as recently as 2018. So there’s a little hope here, even if it’s dim.

#4: BBQ Bacon Burger

The BBQ Bacon Burger was released in 2020 and was, in my view, just about the perfect burger.
It had three slices of bacon (none of that nonsense with calling two slices of bacon “enough” – it never is) and both cheddar and Monterey Jack cheeses.
Plus, lots of a really smoky bbq sauce.

#5: Monterey Melt Burger

The Monterey Melt had some really unique flavor combinations.
Of course it had the two patties, and then American and Monterey Jack cheese, but then they added in peppers and onions and a Jalapeno ranch sauce.
The Jalapeno ranch really made it – at least if you’re in to a little spice with your burger!

#6: Lemon pie

Whataburger used to have an amazing lemon pie – a hot pocket-style dough dumpling filled with creamy lemon-y goodness.
It’s gone – but at least they still have their apple pie? (And their brownie…)

#7: Chili cheese burger

If you like chili, and cheese, and fritos, all on a burger – then this was definitely the burger for you.
The Whataburger Chili Cheese Burger was a big play on comfort food – and it could certainly knock you out for an afternoon after you ate it.

#8: White Chocolate Raspberry Shake

Everything you need to know about this drink is in the name.
It was that perfect combination of sweet and tangy. (The white chocolate also gave it some real body and thickness, which is so important for a really great milkshake.)
I miss it so much.

#9: Chili cheese fries

I’ve always been a sucker for loaded fries.
They’re like nachos with a MUCH better base – because, let’s face it, chips get soggy really easily and are just kind of bland.
Fries hold up much better.
So chili, cheese, and Fritos – all on fries? Yes please.

Summary

To be clear: I get it. Every restaurant has to refresh their menu.
It’s just disappointing to be deprived of some of these amazing dishes!
