Quality is king

In fact, attention to quality is one of the key reasons Buc-ee’s has never franchised their stores (and probably why they’ve expanded so slowly up to now as well).
Buc-ee’s has made clear over the years that they’re focused on delivering an amazing customer experience.
And if you’ve had their breakfast, you know just how well they can deliver on that.

Building the perfect breakfast

In my view, the perfect breakfast has three components:
– Something savory that’ll give you lots of energy
– Something sweet that’ll give you lots of joy
– Something hot that’ll give you lots of caffeine
So now let’s apply this to Buc-ee’s – starting with savory…

Inside the Buc-ee’s breakfast menu

When reading through Buc-ee’s hot, made-to-order breakfast menu, you’ll notice that the menu items pretty much all fall into the following categories:
– Sandwiches
– Burritos
– Kolaches
– Tacos
– Pastries
Let’s dive a little deeper into the options…

Fillings

Generally your burritos, sandwiches, and tacos are all priced in the $2.99-$6.99 range, making them…extremely affordable.
And your fillings are going to look pretty standard – sausage, egg, and cheese; bacon, egg, and cheese; chorizo and potato…that sort of thing.
(And don’t worry – there are vegetarian options too.)
Now here’s where things get interesting:

Kolaches

If you haven’t had a kolache before, you’re missing out.
Basically it’s a doughy dumpling stuffed with something delicious.
In Buc-ee’s case, your savory options are sausage & cheese or jalapeno & cheese, and your sweet options are different fruit fillings.
Straightforward and delicious, and at just $2.99 a piece, they’re the best value on the whole menu.
In my view, the sausage & cheese kolache is the first building block to the best Buc-ee’s breakfast.
It’s that “something savory” that’s going to give you a great shot of energy for the drive ahead.

Sweets

Next you’ll head over to the sweets section to take a look at your options.
Lots to choose from here – fudge ($3.99 per square – try the rocky road and the peanut butter, you won’t regret it), cookies at $1.99 a piece, peanut butter brownie ($2.49 – delicious, but a little too heavy first thing in the morning), and of course…
Pastries for $2.99.

My recommendation

For “something sweet” in your breakfast – go for the cinnamon roll. At $2.99 it’s a steal, and frankly it’s warm and delicious.
Everything that a cinnamon roll should be at an unbeatable price. Yes please.
Ok, so far we’ve got our savory component – sausage and cheese kolache – and our sweet component – cinnamon roll.
Next is caffeine.

Caffeine

Buc-ee’s coffee is – perfectly fine.
If you’re looking for something fancy and amazing and 10 bucks, this is not your place.
It’s a convenience store. The coffee’s good, but if you hand-grind your own beans and want someone to do a heart design in your latte’s steamed milk, you’re gonna be disappointed.
Coffee prices start at $1.49 for the 12 oz regular coffee (up to $1.99 for the 20 oz), and go all the way up to about $4.99 for the vanilla sweet cream cold brew.

My two cents:

Get the regular coffee.
It’s $1.49, it’ll give you that shot of caffeine, and it pairs great with the cinnamon roll.
If you want a fancy latte, be my guest – but strong black coffee is the way to go when you’ve got highway to drive.

Your best breakfast

So there you have it –
– Something savory: Sausage and cheese kolache
– Something sweet: Cinnamon roll
– Something caffeinated: Caramel macchiato.
The best possible Buc-ee’s breakfast you can buy.
Oh but wait –

Grab a snack for the road too

After eating Buc-ee’s, trust me – you’re not gonna want to stop anywhere else on the way.
So grab a snack for the miles ahead.
My choice? Beaver Nuggets!
If you’ve never had them before, get the original.
(If you have had them before, try the sea salt caramel. You’ll love them.)
At $3.99 a pack (or $4.29 for the sea salt caramel), you might as well grab two or three.
