Whataburger is a heck of a burger … and beloved, particularly in Texas.
But fans of other joints may claim hometown bias for the Whataburger lovers.

Intro (continued)

There are tons of great burgers out there today!
So let’s dive right in, with a list of eight burger places whose fans make a strong case…
(And no – Wendy’s, McDonald’s, and Burger King did not make the list.)

Five Guys

Where to find them: Five Guys is in every state aside from Alaska, plus several in Europe, Dubai, and Hong Kong.
Why their burger is better: Honestly, it’s all about the customizability. You can add all the regular ingredients, but then you can go even further by adding stuff like bbq sauce, grilled onions, jalapenos, green peppers, and more.
Plus, their burger is BIGGER – the standard is two beef patties, you have to order the “Little Cheeseburger” to just get one.

Shake Shack

Where to find them: Shake Shack has over 350 locations, with heavy concentrations in New York, California, Texas, New Jersey, and Florida.
Why their burger is better: Their burger is great, but my favorite thing about Shake Shack is how good they are with allergies. Also, their shakes are pretty great.

In-N-Out

Where to find them: In-N-Out is ubiquitous in California but rapidly expanding to additional states.
Why their burger is better: The Double-Double (two slices of cheese, two patties) is just such an excellent burger, and In-N-Out’s sauce is delicious as well. Make sure you try their fries “animal style” at least once – you won’t regret it!

Elevation Burger

Where to find them: They’re based in Maryland but have now expanded to a total of six states.
Why their burger is better: Elevation’s focus has been on delivering really high-quality ingredients: Their burgers are organic, free-range, and grass-fed beef. You can taste the difference. Also try the fries, which are cooked in olive oil – another improvement.

Red Robin

Where to find them: Red Robin is in 44 states, including Alaska (but not Hawaii).
Why their burger is better: In one word: Customization. You can get fried onions, or jalapenos, or grilled pineapple slices, or a fried egg, or all of those things all together on a single burger.

Smash Burger

Where to find them: 35 states and a few international locations – but much denser in their home state of Colorado!
Why their burger is better: For me, it’s all about taste. Their Double Bacon Stack Smash is fantastic when I’m not concerned about health at all. Their customized metal smasher means patties are uniform and crispy, which is a definite plus.

Freddy’s

Where to find them: Freddy’s is based in Kansas and has expanded to 17 states in total.
Why their burger is better: It’s a “steakburger” – so it’s thin and crispy. Also, their custard rocks.

Johnny Rockets

Where to find them: Johnny Rockets is in 20 states plus DC – although it’s not as widespread as it used to be, it’s still around!
Why their burger is better: If you want traditional burgers, they’ve got them for sure – but my personal favorite is the smoke house double, which is a double bacon cheeseburger, plus BBQ ranch, plus onion rings. It’s a mouthful, and it’s absolutely delicious. Oh, and get tots on the side.

But Whataburger is also pretty great

Where to find them: Whataburger is based in Texas but rapidly expanding to more states.
The burger: Great taste, plenty of options – highly recommend getting the diced onions as a topping.
And listen – I couldn’t leave without giving love to Whataburger.
