A longtime Upper Peninsula dining destination has permanently closed its doors, ending a 32-year run that made it a fixture in the local community. The restaurant’s closure also marks the loss of a brewpub that helped shape Michigan’s craft beer scene.
Hereford & Hops closes after 32 years
Hereford & Hops Steak House & Brewpub in downtown Escanaba, Michigan, permanently closed on October 3, 2026, after more than three decades in business.
The restaurant announced the shutdown in late August, citing difficulties maintaining enough staff to operate at the service level customers expected. Owners thanked employees who continued working through the final weeks and expressed gratitude to customers, vendors, and community members who supported the business over the years.
Background
Located at 624 Ludington Street, Hereford & Hops opened in 1994 inside the historic former Delta Hotel building. The five-story brick structure originally opened as a hotel in 1914 and later served other purposes before becoming home to the restaurant.
Hereford & Hops became known for its steakhouse menu, grill-your-own steak experience, Mongolian grill, and on-site brewing operation. It was also recognized as the Upper Peninsula’s first brewpub established since the pre-Prohibition era.
Before closing, the restaurant reduced its operating schedule to Thursday through Saturday evenings and offered a limited menu while supplies lasted. Management also encouraged customers to redeem gift cards before the final day.
Staffing challenges pressure restaurant operators
Hereford & Hops’ closure highlights the difficulties independent restaurants can face when they cannot maintain the workforce needed to run their businesses.
Restaurants depend on sufficient staffing across kitchens, dining rooms, and other operations to maintain service, particularly during busy dinner periods. When staffing levels fall short, businesses may need to reduce hours or discontinue operations altogether.
The owners did not announce what would happen to the restaurant’s brewing equipment or the space following the closure.
For Escanaba, the shutdown represents the end of a longtime gathering place for meals, celebrations, and locally brewed beer. After 32 years, Hereford & Hops has joined the list of established Michigan food and beverage businesses that have closed their doors.
