Wow.
You can do some incredible things with fondant.
You can make a cake that looks like french fries…
Or corn on the cob…
Or even a KFC chicken bucket.

Best of all – fondant is usually vegan and gluten-free, so there’s no reason you can’t enjoy zany decorations like this if you have dietary restrictions.
Of course, if you have dietary restrictions, the big question is – what about the underlying cake itself?
Cakes for alternative diets
I can’t speak to the underlying cakes in the video below, but I know plenty of great recipes for cakes to serve all kinds of dietary needs. Combine them with fondant, and you can do some really cool stuff. Let’s dig in.
- Coconut flour cake. This is a super simple recipe that uses coconut flour to deliver a naturally gluten-free bake. (You can also easily make it keto by subbing in lakanto for sugar.) Great for anyone with a gluten intolerance!
- Paleo carrot cake. This recipe is dairy-free as made and uses coconut flour and almond flour to great effect for a fantastic texture. (And as the name implies – it’s well-aligned with the paleo diet.) To make it vegan, sub out the eggs and use maple syrup instead of honey. Plus, it comes paired with a delicious vegan cream cheese frosting recipe that’s to die for.
- Coconut flour chocolate cake. This rich and delicious recipe is gluten-free and dairy-free…and if you want to go full vegan with it, all you need to do is substitute for the eggs (I usually find JustEgg works well.) You’ll notice there are a LOT of eggs – that’s because coconut flour is highly absorbent, so you need extra liquid (plus more binders because of the lack of gluten).
- Keto chocolate mug cake. Ok, you probably won’t be combining this one with fondant to make a fancy sculpture, since it has almost no flour and needs the mug to provide structure…but this chocolate mug cake is delicious and, as the name indicates, highly aligned with the Keto diet. (But hey, even if you aren’t in to Keto, you’ll love this indulgent treat.
- Coconut flour angel food cake. If you’ve baked with coconut flour before, you know that it can tend toward dense bakes. That’s why this recipe was such a breath of fresh air – it’s light and fluffy, as all good angel food cake should be. It’s also naturally gluten-free and dairy-free.
So just take one of these (well, again, maybe not the mug cake)…and combine it with the fondant just like in the video below.
What amazing things will YOU come up with next?
