What are Calendula Flowers?
Calendula flowers are a vibrant yellow or orange flower. They are also known as a marigold or pot marigolds, which are native to Europe. This flower has so many uses, but you will find when dried it creates this incredible salve that treats a mix of ailments and offers an anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that can treat all skin types.
Also this flower can also be used for adding to hot teas, oils, making into jelly, and more. From natural remedies to soothing herbal tea. The whole flower is incredible in so many ways.
What You’ll Need:
- Dried Calendula Flower – Reach for dried flowers to use to create this rich carnauba wax or salve. You can make dried flowers yourself or head to your local health store and buy them.
- Olive Oil – Now I used olive oil but you can use a jojoba oil or sweet almond oil as the oil for this. Just use a high quality oil that offers health benefits that will nourish the skin.
- Beeswax – You can use beads (pellets) or you can chop up the wax. The idea is to get the melted wax to create the right consistency in your double boiler. If you’re looking for a vegan option, carnauba wax is a great substitute for organic beeswax.
- Lavender Essential Oil – I used this essential oil as it creates a calming and soothing component. Plus lavender offers anti-inflammatory properties which helps make this salve so incredible. Tea tree oil is another essential oil that could be used to swap out in this salve.

FAQ
Many skin-loving herbs and flowers are great options for homemade salves. I’ve used lavender, dandelion, yarrow and comfrey.
Don’t worry if you do not have a double boiler. You can do a makeshift double boiler. Grab a pot and place on the stove. Find a glass bowl that fits into the pot but doesn’t touch the bottom of the pan. Add water in the pot, then place the glass bowl on top. Add the ingredients in the glass bowl to melt down.
Salves typically have a 2-3 year shelf life.
