This coconut oil face wash will change the way you view your skin. An added bonus is that you probably have these ingredients in your kitchen already!

It’s no secret that I love to use coconut oil for skincare. There are so many uses for coconut oil that I keep a bottle on my bathroom for everything from moisturizing my skin, oil pulling, brushing my teeth, and I even use coconut oil to wash my face!
While there are some people who don’t do well using coconut oil on their skin, there are many reasons why most of us should use it daily for healthy, beautiful skin. People living in the tropics have been using coconut oil for thousands of years. It’s packed with vital nutrients that nourish and soothe the skin. It also softens the skin and relieves dryness and flaking. Applied topically it helps to prevent wrinkles, saggy skin and age spots!
Coconut Oil Face Wash Recipe
To make your own coconut oil face wash you’ll need virgin coconut oil or fractionated coconut oil and baking soda. Virgin coconut oil is wonderful for your skin, but it will solidify. If you prefer to use a liquid cleansing oil, use fractionated coconut oil.
Baking soda is another household product that is used in so many personal care products. I use it in my homemade toothpaste and add a scoop of it into my detox bath. If you need a gentle exfoliate for your face, baking soda is an excellent choice! I started using it on my face after reading, Organic Body Care Recipes. The author, who is a licensed esthetician, recommends using baking soda as a natural Microdermabrasion treatment.
This manual microdermabrasion recipe only costs pennies per treatment. In addition, it’s safer and won’t ever leave your skin red or irritated, because of gentle hand application. If this treatment is used on a regular basis, your skin will achieve almost the same results as mechanical microdermabrasion, without having its protective shield compromised.
Her recipe uses baking soda and water with a few drops of helichrysum essential oil. I substituted coconut oil for the water, which I felt made the face wash much more gentle on the skin.
Here is a wonderful soothing coconut oil face wash recipe that will keep your skin looking and feeling its best.

How long will this recipe last me?
Is this safe for eyes? Like, Will this take off eye makeup?
I worked for an eye doctor and we would do coconut oil eye drops for dry eyes. So yes it’s safe but If you’re making this with all the essential oils in them and baking soda then I would be careful not to get it in your eyes but pure plain coconut oil will definitely take your makeup off and it’s safe if it gets in your eyes.
I would like to make the face wash for myself and daughters, but how do I avoid pipes getting clogged so I can advise them and myself?
This is how I keep my drains clear: https://thecoconutmama.com/does-coconut-oil-clog-your-drains/
Can we use any type of coconut oil while preparing this face wash?
Yes, fractionated coconut oil will stay liquid while virgin coconut oil will solidify.
Thanks for the reply
I am super excited to give this DIY a try 🙂 I Love Coconut.
Won’t the coconut oil clog the drain pipes, especially using the face wash every day?
I actually had it happen. So I only use coconut oil on my face as a lotion that is given plenty of time to sink into my skin. Never as anything I am flushing down the pipes. Even a little every day builds up.
I made mine last night. When you are saying “Virgin” is that the organic unrefined? That is what I am using.
Yes 🙂
Can I make this without the lavender oil and if so what would I substitute and what would the measurements be. Thank you
While I love the idea of a DIY face wash, I would be afraid of what the coconut oil would do to my drain/pipes.
Mix coconut water and coconut oil together. Just make sure you shake it up good before applying to your face. Use on deck , chest stead, etc. I have extremely sensitive skin and am prone to redness on nose and cheeks. Plus it helps slow down wrinkles and aging. Wish I had found this earlier in life. Like my twenties or thirties.
Thanks for this ?
My baking soda sinks to the bottom will it eventually disintegrate with stirring
Most of it does. I still have some at the bottom of my jar. I just shake it a little before using. Hope this helps! 🙂
I just made this about an hour ago and just noticed the problem/concern Annie mentioned above. It seemed as if 1 tbsp of baking soda was too much to disolve in the warm coconut oil and so it settled. I’m still looking forward to trying this tonight. Thanks for all you share!
Baking soda is not soluble in oil. When heated it converts to sodium carbonate (washing soda) which is more of a water softener than a surfactant/detergent.
I love to learn about new homemade ways to replace very expensive products, but I’m just not clear how this “washes” your face. Does it actually remove a day’s worth of make up and pollution?? Or should I just use it in the morning shower?
Yes, it does! Oil works wonderful for removing making and pollution from your skin. Google oil cleansing method to learn more. It’s fascinating!
Hi there! Does it matter what grade coconut oil you use? Thank you! 🙂
Virgin is best in my opinion, but you can use any grade for skincare.
Hi- I’m very new to the idea of using coconut oil to wash my face. I have been using a very expensive product line. I have wrinkles and scarring- do I use anything after washing the coconut/baking soda off? How many times do I use it? Do I moisturize after?
