Learn how to make the viral flaxseed face mask! This mask has a smoothing and tightening effect when applied to the skin – some people even say it’s like nature’s botox!

Benefits of flaxseed mask for the skin
When mixed with water, the mucilage found in flaxseeds forms a gel-like consistency, which feels and acts just like eggs for baking! But it also makes an excellent base for a homemade face mask or even a natural hair gel.
So, why would you put this mucousy stuff on your face?
Well, flaxseeds are packed with omega-3 fatty acids, lignans, and antioxidants, all of which work together to nourish and rejuvenate the skin.
These mighty seeds possess anti-inflammatory properties that can help soothe irritated skin, reduce redness, and combat acne.
The antioxidants help combat free radicals, which can contribute to premature aging and skin damage.
A flaxseed mask also offers a temporary skin-tightening effect as it dries on the skin, providing a feeling of firmness and tautness. This quick tightening sensation can help minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, creating a smoother and more youthful complexion, albeit momentarily.
How to make a DIY flaxseed face mask

Creating your own flaxseed face mask is surprisingly simple. You only need 2 ingredients – 1/2 cup of flaxseeds and 2 cups of water!
Here’s a step-by-step guide:
- Place ½ cup of whole flaxseeds in a temperature-safe bowl. Here are the flaxseeds I used.
- Boil 2 cups of distilled water.
- Pour the boiling water over the flaxseeds and stir well.
- Allow the mixture to cool for a few hours until it’s thick and gooey.
- Once cooled, pour the mixture through a cheesecloth or mesh strainer to remove the seeds. This step is optional, but I prefer to strain it. A few seeds may come through, but that’s okay.
- Pour the gel mask into a glass container or jar.
- Storage: You can keep this face mask in a sealed container in the fridge for up to a week.
How to use the flaxseed face mask
Apply the mask all over your face and let it sit for around 20 minutes.
Once it dries, rinse off with cool water.
What to expect
This mask feels cold and soothing when applied on the skin. After just a few minutes, I could feel the mask tightening as it dried.
After using the mask, my skin felt firm and smooth, and it did minimize some redness.
