Illinois has had a rough 2025.
It’s been plagued by factory shutdowns as inflation, the trade war, and an increasingly sluggish economy have taken a big toll.
And unfortunately – it looks like the pain is just beginning for Illinois.
Two more companies have announced incoming factory closures – TreeHouse Foods in Chicago and Archer-Daniels-Midland (ADM) in Bushnell.

TreeHouse Foods’ factory shutdown is slated to cause 80 layoffs, which will begin in 11 days, on September 29th.
Meanwhile, ADM’s planned shutdown was just announced a couple weeks ago, so we don’t have a ton of details just yet. Nonetheless, we know their Illinois soy protein production plant is closing down as part of a broader reorganization (ADM actually closed another soybean plant in South Carolina earlier this year).
The soy market had been in a multiyear expansion, but this year has sparked a sharp pullback, probably in part due to the unofficial Chinese boycott of American soybeans that has blown a huge hole in export revenues this year.
(And Illinois is one of the seven states likely to be most impacted, unfortunately.)
It’s a tough situation to be sure, and likely there’s more pain incoming as the economic pullback continues.
