Intro

Prices almost always rise over time, but it’s been a particularly rough few years for the old wallet.
Meals is one of the places we feel it the most. “Wasn’t that pizza $2 cheaper last time?”
But believe it or not, the cost of many things are rising faster than food.
Here are five based on the latest year-over-year government data.

General inflation is 2.6%

Before we get to food, the rate of overall inflation was 2.6% in October 2024 (vs. the previous October).
To get technical, that’s the CPI-U (consumer price index for all urban consumers).
While the overall rate is down quite a bit from recent years and sitting pretty reasonably, there are still some areas where we feel it more than others…

Food is 2.1% more expensive

Food is actually rising slower than overall inflation, but those who prefer eating out at restaurants had a worse go of it this past year than people who prefer to cook…
Food at home: 1.1%
Food away from home: 3.8%

1) The price of electricity rose 4.5%

Natural gas was a little better, rising just 2.0% over the past year.

2) Housing rose 4.9% (!)

They call it “shelter,” and that includes the cost for both people who own their houses/condos/townhomes/etc. and those who rent.
Because shelter is such a large expense for most of us, it accounted for over 65% of inflation when excluding food and energy.

3) Medical care rose 3.8%

This one includes things like the cost of going to the doctor or buying your prescriptions.

4) The cost of traveling (airplane, bus, and train) rose 8.2% (!)

Based on my own recent travels, this one certainly “feels” true!

5) Car insurance rose 14% (!!!)

All those commercials during football tout savings, but auto insurance sure got more expensive this past year!
Hopefully the coming year is better for car insurance (and some other key expenses)!
