A longtime Kroger location in Owensboro, Kentucky, is set to close on or before November 4 as the company prepares a larger Marketplace store in the city. Unlike some of the Kroger closures affecting communities nationwide, the Owensboro change comes with a planned replacement nearby.
Kroger confirmed the closing of its store at 2308 East Fourth Street, along Kentucky Highway 144, in an August statement to The Owensboro Times. The company said the newer Marketplace location would offer a wider range of fresh products and expanded services.
For those unfamiliar with Kroger Marketplace stores, they’re massive. Think almost twice the size of a typical Kroger.

What happens to the existing store
The East Fourth Street store is scheduled to close by November 4, 2026. That is an announced deadline, not proof that the store has already shut; as of October 12 the date remains in the future.
The plan is connected to a new Kroger Marketplace off Kentucky Highway 54. Kroger had broken ground on the project about a year before the August report and said at that point it intended to open the new store in the fall of 2026.
The company did not provide a firm grand-opening date in its statement, so shoppers should not assume the replacement will open on November 4 or that there will be no gap between the closing and the new store’s debut.
Employees were promised opportunities elsewhere
Kroger said workers at the East Fourth Street location would be given employment opportunities at other Owensboro stores. It did not specify how many employees were affected in the statement reviewed, and offering other roles is not the same as confirming that every individual will accept a transfer.
Local reporting identifies two other Kroger stores in Owensboro, at 2630 Frederica Street and 1670 Starlite Drive. Those stores provide nearby alternatives for customers who want to remain with the chain as its network changes.
The store’s departure therefore differs from a grocery chain pulling out of a town altogether. Customers may face a change in routine, but the company intends to continue serving Owensboro rather than ending its presence in the market.
In its reporting on the announcement, The Owensboro Times published Kroger’s assurances about expanded shopping options and continued employment opportunities. Those are company plans; the timeline should still be checked against a fresh opening notice before readers make travel plans.
The new store was under development as of the reporting reviewed. News of new traffic signals around the project in September showed associated road work progressing, but road improvements alone do not establish a precise store opening date.
For Owensboro residents, the central development is a defined closing deadline for one location, paired with a larger replacement project whose opening date remains to be confirmed.
