This whipped lavender body butter is soft and creamy and will leave your skin feeling soft and moisturized! Made with natural ingredients like cocoa butter, jojoba oil, and essential oils, this body butter is great for those with sensitive and dry skin.
I love making my own body butter! You can use a variety of butters like coconut oil, mango butter, cocoa butter and oils like avocado oil, sweet almond oil and olive oil. Creating a creamy body butter takes blending hard fats like shea butter with a liquid oil like grapeseed oil or argan oil. Combining the two types of fats creates a smooth and creamy texture that’s great for the skin.
For this recipe I used organic coconut oil, jojoba oil, and cocoa butter, but you can use other oils like raw shea butter, organic sunflower oil, and olive oil. Variations and substitutes will be listed in this post to help you create your own lavender body butter.
How To Make Whipped Lavender Body Butter
For this recipe you will need lavender infused oil (recipe below), coconut oil, cocoa butter, arrowroot powder and lavender essential oil.
Lavender Infused Oil:
To make the infused lavender oil, you will need dried lavender buds and a liquid carrier oil like jojoba oil, olive oil, or primrose oil.
Long Infusion: Add 1/3 cup of lavender into a jar and top with the carrier oil. Cover with a lid and leave in a cool dark place for 4-6 weeks. Strain the lavender from the oil and pour into a clean container.
Short Infusion: Add 1/3 cup of lavender into a jar and top with the carrier oil. Cover with a lid and place in the bottom of a crock pot. Fill the bottom of the pot with a few inches of water and heat on warm for 4-6 hours. Once infused, remove the oil from the water bath and strain the lavender from the oil.
Lavender Body Butter:
To make the body butter you will need 2 ounces of lavender infused oil (recipe above), 3 ounces of coconut oil, 3 ounces of cocoa butter, 2 teaspoons of arrowroot powder and 20 drops of lavender essential oil.
Warm the cocoa butter and coconut oil in a double boiler over medium heat. Once both oils melt, remove the pot from the heat and add the lavender infused oil, arrow root powder, and essential oils. Use a whisk to incorporate the arrowroot powder into the oils.
Pour the warm oil into a medium size glass or metal bowl and place in the refrigerator for an hour or until the oils harden. You may also place the oils into a mixing bowl if you plan to use a stand mixer to whip the body butter.
Once set, remove the bowl from the refrigerator. Use an electric mixer to whip the body butter. Whip until the body butter is creamy and light. Do a skin test to check the application. If it’s too greasy, you can add another teaspoon of arrowroot powder or corn starch to the bowl. Continue to whip until you reach desired texture, but don’t over whip or the oils will melt and the butter will loose it’s texture.
Use a spatula to scoop the body butter out of the bowl and into the body butter container (I use a glass jar). Cover with a lid and store the body butter in a cool dry place.
Lavender Body Butter Substitutions:
- Lavender Infused Oil: This infused oil helps give this body butter a beautiful lavender aroma, but you may use a carrier oil instead of an infused oil.
- Liquid Oil: Use your favorite liquid oil in this recipe based on what you have on hand, enjoy working with or for your skincare goals. Jojoba oil is one of my favorite skincare oils to use and is generally safe for all skin types, even sensitive skin.
- Coconut Oil: You can use babassu butter or raw shea butter instead, but coconut oil is the most forgiving oil and consistency makes a really great quality body butter. Shea butter can change texture if it cools too quickly and can give the body butter a grainy texture if not heated to the correct temperature.
- Cocoa Butter: You can substitute cocoa butter with a hard seed butter like mango butter or kokum butter.
- Arrowroot powder: You may use corn starch in place of arrowroot powder or leave the starch out completely. The use of it is to help make the formula less greasy.
- Lavender Essential Oil: Since this is a recipe for Lavender body butter, lavender is the best essential oil for this recipe. If you’d prefer to avoid essential oils, then the lanvender infused oil is enough to scent this body butter with lanveder aroma.
