California’s extensive factory closures seem to capture all the headlines…
And given the overall collapse of American manufacturing since the tariffs hit – you can see why.

But the fact is that lots of companies in California are unfortunately doing layoffs as the economy slows and trade war uncertainty grows.
And that goes double for California’s food industry, which has always operated with narrow margins that are being further compressed by inflation and increased labor costs.
Here’s a partial list of food-related companies doing layoffs in California so far this year:
- Coca-Cola
- Frito-Lay
- Walmart
- Rite Aid
- Walgreens
- Safeway
- US Foods
- Draegers Supermarkets
- Del Monte Foods
- Republic National Distributing Company
- Rich Products Corporation
- Columbus Manufacturing
- Spreckels Sugar Company
It’s a tough job market across California, for sure, and the year isn’t finished yet.
