Intro

So many great flavors, so little time.
In addition to its very solid traditional lineup – including, let’s be honest, far and away the best hot and fresh doughnut out there – Krispy Kreme has done a fantastic job over the years thinking up wacky new seasonal flavors, often in tandem with a celebrity.
(As one example, they partnered with Dolly Parton just a few months ago for some truly epic stuff.)
Of course, all great things must come to an end…

Intro (continued)

And Krispy Kreme has unfortunately let a ton of great doughnuts go by the wayside over the years.
(Even while still maintaining, again, an impressive lineup of great current flavors!)
Here are seven that I truly wish they’d bring back, even while acknowledging it’s incredibly unlikely…

Chocolate peppermint bark

The story: The chocolate peppermint bark doughnut was introduced as a seasonal flavor in December 2010, then discontinued at the end of the month.
Which is a shame! Because this should have been an instant classic.
The doughnut: Great doughnut – classic chocolate cake doughnut topped with liquid chocolate and crushed peppermint bark candy. Simple, straightforward, Christmas-y, delicious. I will never understand why this didn’t get into the regular rotation. But it’s been 15 years – it’s probably not coming back!

Original glazed with vanilla kreme

The story: This was a longtime mainstay on Krispy Kreme’s menu which was eventually replaced with different kreme-filled doughnuts in mid-2019.
The doughnut: This was an original glazed doughnut with a pocket in the middle filled with vanilla kreme. If you’ve ever had Krispy Kreme’s raspberry-filled or lemon-filled doughnut, you know the general shape and taste – just sub in vanilla for raspberry or lemon.
It was quite good. But also, I get why they wanted to go for a more “interesting” fruit flavor like lemon or raspberry.

Caramel apple cake doughnut

The story: This doughnut was launched as a seasonal flavor in 2021 as part of Krispy Kreme’s larger carnival theme that summer. It was discontinued after a short run, which is a shame because it was genuinely quite good. But so it goes with seasonal flavors, and they rarely repeat.
The doughnut: This was another cake doughnut, with apple flavor baked in and glazed with delicious caramel icing. Indulgent and an extremely nostalgic flavor.
And honestly, while I always liked the taste of caramel apples…I feel like they were always kind of a mess and difficult to manage – you had some bites that had too much caramel, and a lot more that had too much apple. This was a much more balanced approach!

Caramel chocolate pretzel doughnut

The story: This was a summer 2013 flavor and was discontinued in September 2013.
The doughnut: Chocolate, pretzel, caramel. What’s not to love? It’s an iconic combination, the perfect distillation of salty + sweet and crunchy + smooth, all combined in one delicious doughnut.
I miss it. Don’t you?

Butterfinger original filled doughnut

The story: This doughnut was available in early 2020, right as lockdowns were happening…and while it of course didn’t make up for the isolation, it certainly helped! One of my all-time favorite limited edition Krispy Kreme doughnuts.
The doughnut: The doughnut was stuffed with a peanut butter and chocolate kreme…dipped in Butterfinger-flavored icing…and then topped with pieces of Butterfinger candy. I mean, what could go wrong?

Key lime pie filled doughnut

The story: This was introduced in April of 2013 and removed in May. Another beloved seasonal flavor, gone too soon!
The doughnut: Imagine a deconstructed key lime pie in a doughnut. That’s basically what you’ve got here – the doughnut was filled with a key lime-flavored custard (yum), then topped with key lime flavored icing and some crumbled graham crackers.
I mean, honestly, what’s not to love about that?

Chocolate cheesecake doughnut

The story: This doughnut was introduced in early 2014 and discontinued a little later that year – another great seasonal flavor that absolutely deserves a comeback.
The doughnut: This was another classic filled doughnut – filled with a chocolate cheesecake filling, then topped with chocolate frosting and crumbled-up brownie. Uh, yes please.

So there you have it – seven Krispy Kreme doughnuts I think we’ll probably never see again.
And it’s such a shame, because the flavors were all so good!
And of course…the big question…
