What’s the best part of a grilled cheese? The melty cheese of course! But, when gooey cheese, meets a crispy cheese and butter crust, well, that’s kind of taking a grilled cheese to a whole new level.
And it’s a level that fills the kitchen with the nearly unbearably delicious scent of butter, two cheeses, and toasty bread.
Could someone bottle that scent up, please?
And while I love Starbucks’ grilled cheese…I love even more saving the money by making it at home.

Starbucks grilled cheese ingredients and substitutions
Nothing here should be a huge surprise, hopefully!
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature, divided
- 2 tablespoons freshly grated parmesan cheese
- 4 slices sourdough bread
- 2 slices fresh mozzarella, or mozzarella from a brick, approximately ¼-inch thick
- 2 slices white sharp cheddar cheese, approximately ¼-inch thick
Do you want to sub in different cheeses? Feel free. They’re all great. I used mozzarella and cheddar, but dill Havarti with Swiss would be amazing. Gruyere and cheddar would be the cat’s meow too. Also, provolone with a tangy cheddar horseradish would be something for the history books. It’s up to you and whatever you’re craving that day!
You can make these ahead of time for a large gathering! Just pan fry them, and place them in a 200 degree oven on a wire rack until serving them. That way, you can have the fun party food done, and holding at perfect temperature while you get dressed! Win, win, win!
