Intro

Let’s be real: onion rings don’t get nearly the attention they deserve. Fries may be the fast-food favorite, but there’s something so satisfying about biting into a crispy, golden ring of battered onion — especially when it’s fried to perfection.
And yet, not every chain gets it right. Some rings are soggy, flavorless, or worse, made from onion paste. But when a place nails it? Total bliss.
I’ve tasted my fair share of onion rings from some of the most popular fast-food spots and ranked them from worst to best — so the next time that craving hits, you’ll know exactly where to go.

#10: White Castle

White Castle isn’t exactly known for having great sides, so I wasn’t expecting much — but the onion chips caught me off guard (in a good way). They’re crispy, golden, and way more flavorful than I expected. Honestly, they kind of remind me of a deconstructed Bloomin’ Onion — and I mean that as a compliment.
The rings themselves? Meh. Not terrible, just not memorable. But the chips? I’d order those again.

#9: Burger King

Here’s the thing about BK’s onion rings: they’re not really onion rings. Instead of real slices, they use reconstituted onion paste molded into a ring shape. Some people love that weirdly uniform texture and the nostalgic taste — especially when dunked in zesty sauce — but let’s be honest, they’re basically onion-flavored rings of mystery. Not the worst, but definitely not the best.

#8: Jack in the Box

Jack in the Box gives you onion rings that look promising — golden, crispy, and perfectly shaped. But one bite in, you’re met with a mushy interior and grease overload. The flavor is fine, but they never quite hit the mark. These are the definition of “meh,” and they don’t hold a candle to Jack’s curly fries.

#7: Dairy Queen

You might not think to order onion rings from a place known for ice cream, but DQ’s are surprisingly solid. They’re crisped nicely, seasoned enough to be satisfying, and make a great side for a burger or chicken strip basket. Nothing revolutionary here, but if you’re already at the drive-thru ordering a Blizzard, they’re a decent upgrade from fries.

#6: Carl’s Jr.

Carl’s Jr. serves up onion rings that are actually good. Thick, crunchy, and reliably golden, these are the kind you want in your burger combo. They have that satisfying bite and a subtly seasoned batter that doesn’t overpower the onion. They’re not fancy, but they don’t need to be — just classic, greasy goodness.

#5: Whataburger

Everything’s bigger in Texas — including the flavor. Whataburger’s onion rings are thick-cut and perfectly fried, with a slightly peppery batter that lets the sweet onion shine through. They’re not overly greasy, the portion size is generous, and they pair ridiculously well with a patty melt or Spicy Ketchup. Not quite the best, but dangerously close.

#4: Arby’s

Arby’s may be famous for its curly fries, but their onion rings are a hidden gem. These oversized rings have a super crunchy shell and are seasoned just enough to make each bite interesting. Even when they get a little soggy (and let’s be honest, fast food rings usually do), they still taste good — which says a lot.

#3: Culver’s

Culver’s doesn’t mess around when it comes to sides. Their onion rings are hand-battered, crispy without being too heavy, and made with sweet slices of real onion. The breading clings perfectly to each ring, and the overall flavor is just so satisfying. Bonus: they’re amazing with ranch, honey mustard, or just on their own. Definitely worth the upgrade.

#2: Sonic

Sonic’s onion rings are unlike anything else on this list. Why? Because they’re sweet. That’s thanks to the signature move of soaking the onions in vanilla ice cream mix before frying — and weird as it sounds, it totally works. The batter caramelizes beautifully, giving each bite a sweet-savory crunch that’s borderline addictive. Love them or hate them, you’ll definitely remember them.
And honestly? I love them.

#1: A&W

Taking the #1 spot is a bit of a dark horse — but A&W’s onion rings deserve the crown. They’re everything onion rings should be: crisp, light, not overly greasy, and made with real, thick-cut slices of onion. The batter is perfectly golden and never overshadows the flavor of the sweet onion inside. And when you bite into one and it crunches just right? Magic.

Summary

So, there you have it — the best (and worst) fast-food onion rings, ranked.
But the real question remains…
What do YOU think — did your favorite make the list? Who would you put at #1?
