Intro

If it feels like your grocery bill keeps creeping higher — even when you’re buying the same old stuff — you’re not imagining it.
A lot of everyday foods have gotten so pricey, they’re starting to feel like splurges. And for plenty of shoppers, that’s where they draw the line.
We’re talking meat, junk food, even eggs. Things that used to be regulars in the cart are getting left behind because the cost just doesn’t make sense anymore.
Here are ten foods that have gotten so expensive, Americans have pretty much stopped buying them.

#10: Real Butter

Butter is one of those staples you don’t realize you rely on until the price suddenly doubles.
It seems to have gotten more and more expensive lately, and I go through a lot when I’m baking — so I usually grab whatever’s cheapest for that.
But for spreading on toast or cooking with, I like the good stuff — grass-fed, organic, and way better tasting.
The problem is, it’s gotten so pricey that I wait for a sale, stock up, and throw it in the freezer.
But for some people, the cost just isn’t worth it anymore — they’ve stopped buying butter altogether.

#9: Steak

Steak has always been a bit of a splurge — but lately, it’s gotten really expensive.
I used to grab a couple cuts for weekend dinners, but now? I only buy it for special occasions. Even cheaper cuts like sirloin or flank have jumped in price, and it’s hard to justify tossing a ribeye into the cart “just because.”
Even ground beef feels pricey these days, which makes steak even harder to justify. Some people have cut it out entirely and are turning to other proteins or meatless meals to save money, and I don’t blame them.

#8: Salmon

Healthy? Yes. Affordable? Not anymore.
I used to always buy wild, frozen salmon, but it’s gotten ridiculously expensive — and as someone who loves having it once a week, it honestly hurts. Eating healthy has started to feel like a luxury.
Fresh prices have skyrocketed thanks to rising demand, shipping costs, and supply issues. These days, a lot of people are switching to canned salmon, frozen fillets, or skipping it altogether and going with a cheaper fish instead.

#7: Chips

I remember when chips were like $1–2 a bag — now a regular bag of name-brand chips is $5.
I’ve even seen some going for $8. Are you serious? Who’s paying these prices?
For something that’s not all that nutritious (and let’s be honest, mostly air), I just can’t justify it anymore.

#6: Cereal

Cereal used to be the cheapest breakfast around. Not anymore.
Between inflation, packaging costs, and brand markups, the price of your favorite box has gone way up — and at this point, it feels more like a treat than a pantry staple.
Don’t even get me started on those healthier, higher-protein cereals — I was genuinely shocked at how much a single box costs.

#5: Soda

Soda’s gotten so expensive lately, it almost feels like a luxury item — which is wild, considering it used to be one of the cheapest things you could grab.
With rising prices, smaller packaging, and added taxes in some areas, more and more people are cutting back. Honestly, it’s probably a good thing because it’s making us healthier — but still. It’s hard to ignore how quickly the cost has gone up.

#4: Deli Meat

Deli meat used to be an easy grab for quick lunches — now it feels like a splurge.
One time I bought sliced roast beef for sandwiches at my local Safeway and it cost me $40. Yup… forty dollars. For lunch meat. And I’m not the only one shocked by the price — people online are saying it’s now cheaper to buy a steak than a pound of turkey from the deli counter.
I’ve switched to buying rotisserie chickens or roasting my own meat at home to save money.

#3: Eggs

Eggs have always been affordable protein — until they weren’t.
Prices have surged, especially for organic or free-range varieties. But here’s a tip: if you live near a rural area, find a local who raises chickens. You might score eggs for cheap (or free), and they’ll probably taste better, too.

#2: Popcorn

What’s up with microwave popcorn? It’s become oddly pricey for what it is — corn, oil, and butter flavoring.
With butter prices up and packaging costs rising, many people are skipping the store-bought stuff and air-popping kernels at home. It’s cheaper, healthier, and kind of fun to customize your own seasoning.

#1: Nuts

I love snacking on nuts — they’re healthy, filling, and easy to grab on the go. But lately? The prices are nuts.
Walnuts, cashews, and pistachios have gotten so expensive it’s ridiculous. Where I live, a bag of nuts is easily $20.
Blame droughts, shipping costs, and global demand. At this point, trail mix is practically a luxury snack.
