Well, if you needed more proof that the US economy was floundering…
(And if the ugly retail data out of Texas didn’t convince you already…)
Then look no further than the recent rash of Popeyes restaurants closing.
Popeyes isn’t just any chain. It’s beloved – because, let’s face it, their chicken is fantastic. (And they’ve done a great job of capitalizing on the new saucy chicken craze.)
That’s why it’s so shocking to see even Popeyes suffering as the economy falters and restaurants face the trifecta of inflation (rising food prices), labor shortages (and attendant wage increases), and declining consumer spending.

These are all recent closings, too, which adds to concerns that there could be more to come:
- Gulfway Drive, Port Arthur, Texas (closed in July)
- Link Avenue, Orange, Texas (closed in July)
- First Street and McKinley Avenue, Fresno, California (closed in April)
- Palm Avenue, San Diego, California (closed Spring 2025)
- Wheeler Street, Jasper, Texas (closed in July)
And before you start blaming Popeyes – even Chick-fil-A is closing stores nowadays.
The restaurant industry’s troubles are certainly multiplying.
