I’m a huge coffee lover and genuinely relish the scent of freshly brewed coffee. Coffee candles are my personal favorites because they allow me to savor that wonderful coffee fragrance all day long. If you’re keen on candle making and share my love for coffee, then this DIY project is tailor-made for you!
How to Make a DIY Coffee Candle in a Mug
For this DIY coffee mug candle, you will need a coffee mug, beeswax (you can also use soy wax flakes to make soy candles), ground coffee, and coffee essential oil.
Step One: Prepare the Ingredients
Grind your whole coffee beans and measure out the beeswax. The amount of wax you need will depend on the size of your coffee mug. I like to fill my mug with unmelted wax pellets as a way of gauging the amount I need. Fill the mug three-quarters full with wax pellets to determine the necessary quantity of beeswax.
Step Two: Melt the Wax
Add the wax to a double boiler and place it over medium-high heat. Stir the wax until it completely melts. Once the wax is fully melted, remove the pan from the heat. Add the ground coffee and essential oil to the melted wax and stir to incorporate the fragrance.
Step Three: Attach the Wick
Next, you’ll want to attach the wick to the bottom of the mug. I prefer to use wicks with a self-adhesive sticker, but you can also use glue to affix the wick to the center of the mug. Once the candle wick is securely placed, use a chopstick or a popsicle stick to keep the wick centered while pouring the wax.
Step Four: Pour the Candle
Carefully pour the melted wax into the empty mug. Fill it up to the top of the candle, leaving about a half-inch of space at the top. After the wax has cooled and solidified, trim the wick to the desired length, and your coffee-scented candle is ready to use.

FAQ
How long does it take for the candle to solidify?
It can take a few hours for the candle to solidify fully. Be patient and avoid moving the mug during this time.
How do I care for the coffee candle once it’s set?
Trim the wick to about 1/4 inch above the candle’s surface before lighting it. When burning, place it on a heat-resistant surface and never leave a burning candle unattended.
What type of wax is best for coffee candles?
I use beeswax for my candle making, but you may use other popular choices, like soy or paraffin.
What other containers can I make these candles in other than a mug?
You may use a mason jars or candle tins for your diy coffee bean candle.
