I don’t know about you, but whenever I’ve tried making dumplings, the results are usually…
Not great?
I mean, to be clear…
Everything TASTES good.
With noodle flour for the dumplings themselves, plus delicious ingredients (I love bok choy, lightly pickled carrots and onions, pork, and sesame oil – but you do you!), it’s hard to have dumplings that don’t taste good.
And as long as you pan-fry them until they turn brown, obviously you’ll get good textures.
No, my problems really come in when I’m FOLDING.
My dumplings themselves are just usually kind of misshapen and weird-looking.
Not at all like the deliciously perfect dumplings in this picture 🙂
And hey, don’t judge a book by its cover!
But for someone who learned how to fold dumplings in Thailand, you’d think I’d be better at it?
Anyway. I came across this fantastic video that gives step-by-step dumpling-folding instructions. It’s great.
Before jumping into that, though, let’s talk ingredients and recipes.
Dumpling ideas from top Asian recipes and ingredients
This is definitely not a complete list – post ideas and recipe requests in the comments!
- Crock pot teriyaki chicken. I LOVE teriyaki chicken, and while it’s not exactly a “traditional” dumpling ingredient, it’s delicious and a great way to change up your routine. Aside from the taste, one of the reasons I really love this recipe is because you can make it in a crock pot, so it’s a set-and-forget recipe perfect for a workweek.
- Salmon vermicelli noodle bowl. This delicious, filling, and nutritious recipe is a great alternative to going out to eat. If you chop up the vermicelli noodles really small, you could also stuff this recipe into dumplings for a nice ‘fusion’ take of two fantastic Asian recipes!
- Tom Kha Gai (also known as Thai coconut soup). This delicious, nourishing soup is made with coconut milk, chicken broth, and lots of vegetables. And you can really easily make it at home! (I don’t recommend it in dumplings though. Hard to get all the components into a single soup dumpling!)
- Pork cabbage wraps. (Also great for Keto – because of course, cabbage doesn’t have all the carbs you’d expect from rice or dumplings.) Obviously this can very easily convert to a dumpling if you’re not concerned about carbs. Yum!
- Homemade sesame oil. Sesame oil is a BIG component in lots of pan-Asian dishes, and what better way to really immerse yourself in the cuisine than by making your own sesame oil? Also, I’ve found there’s a clear quality difference whenever I make something at home vs just buying it from the store. Give it a try.

Once you’ve gathered your ingredients, check out this video – where they’ll teach you how to fold dumplings like a lotus, like a rose, and like a shell. (Really, it looks just like a shell!)
