Ohio just can’t seem to catch a break.
After a string of recent factory closures impacting hundreds of jobs across the state…
Ohio just suffered another blow to its already shaky economy.
More specifically, Graphic Packaging International recently closed its coated recycled paperboard facility in Middletown, Ohio – at a cost of 130 good local jobs.

Coated recycled paperboard is an important part of the food supply chain – it’s used to make containers and meets FDA standards for food contact – and food packaging mills have been shutting down all over the country.
The reason is simple – the food industry is in decline, as the combination of higher input costs (inflation and tariffs), trade war uncertainty, and consumer spending declines due to recession and unemployment fears all combine to create a messy situation for companies to navigate.
So it’s a nationwide problem, not something specific to Ohio – although that’s probably cold comfort to the 130 folks who now have to find a new job.
Speaking of comfort – if you have any encouraging words to share with these newly unemployed factory workers, please leave a comment!
