Intro

If you’ve ever been to Buc-ee’s, you know that it’s…a lot.
(In the best possible way.)
Beef jerky…kolaches…beaver nuggets…paddle tails…chopped brisket…homemade chips…
The list goes on, and on, and on.
And let’s face it:

It’s big

That’s by design!
Most new Buc-ee’s builds are 70,000+ square feet, as compared to the typical convenience store at 2,000-4,000 square feet.
Heck, each Buc-ee’s is about half the size of your average Costco!
So there’s a ton of stuff. A ton of choices. And a ton of food that’s fantastic.
There’s a reason people keep comparing it to Disney World! (Actually, nine reasons to be more precise.)
But hey, the reality is:

Some stuff is overrated

Some of it is overrated!
That’s not to say that they’re necessarily “bad” – is anything at Buc-ee’s really all that bad? – but just that they’re way overhyped.
By the same token, there’s one snack I always buy no matter what, because it is fantastic and absolutely worth the price. Let’s start there:

BBQ taco

When I’m on the road and looking for something to tide me over until lunch, any of Buc-ee’s BBQ tacos will absolutely do.
You’ve got your choice of fillings – brisket, chicken, or pulled pork – and all of them are delicious. And filling enough to last me for an hour or two, but not a “full meal” if that makes sense.
Plus, the price is phenomenal: $3.99 each. For homemade BBQ? Yes please.
I kind of shake my head when people pass these over, especially when it’s for one of these overrated snacks:

Way overhyped: Beaver nuggets

I like beaver nuggets, don’t get me wrong.
But they’re not the be-all end-all that people present them as. They’re a little too sweet for my palate, plus they don’t really satisfy my hunger at all since they’re mostly just air.
If you’re looking for a similar flavor profile – honestly, there are some better options out there.
And you don’t need to go to Buc-ee’s to get them!

Overhyped: Beaver chips

Buc-ee’s beaver chips are fine, don’t get me wrong.
But they’re not, like, the best chips you’ve ever had or anything. Just good, solid kettle chips, usually warm.
(And honestly, Doritos taste better.)

Way overhyped: Fudge

Buc-ee’s fudge tastes like…you know…fudge.
In all fairness, they have some pretty cool flavors – one of my favorites is “tiger butter” – but it’s just expensive fudge, you know?
To be clear about my biases here, I’m not a huge fudge gal anyway, I tend to prefer dark chocolate. So maybe I’m just missing it.

Overhyped: Sausage on a stick

I love Buc-ee’s bbq…
And also, people are way too excited about the fact that Buc-ee’s took a sausage, stuck it on a stick, and wrapped it in a tortilla.
The flavor’s fine, and the sausage is something like a foot long, but like – it’s just smoked meat you can get most places, you know?

Way overhyped: Paddle tails

For the uninitiated, Buc-ee’s paddle tails are big pastries shaped like a beaver’s paddle tail.
There’s cinnamon, there’s icing, it’s big, it’s pretty good.
But, like, it’s mostly just a unique shape, you know?
The tastes are pretty in line with a solid cinnamon roll. And you can get those just about anywhere.

Overhyped (and way too expensive): Jerky

Credit where it’s due: Buc-ee’s has made some really cool jerky flavors.
Their Korean bbq jerky is cool, the sweet and spicy has a nice balance (so does their jalapeno honey, their ghost pepper jerky will knock your socks off, etc.
But at the end of the day, is it really that much better than other jerky? I don’t think so. And at $30 a pound from their beef jerky bar…
I just think that’s way overpriced. It’s good! But not, like, THAT good.

Summary

So there you have it – my favorite Buc-ee’s snack…and a few that I think are just not all “that” good versus what they’ve been hyped up to be.
And again – that’s not to say that any of these foods is “bad” – it’s just that I think they’ve been way overhyped.
(Happens when you’re interacting with a brand as beloved as Buc-ee’s.)
And speaking of which, I’m curious…
