Intro

It’s the strangest thing.
Whenever I visit Buc-ee’s – and with all the new ones springing up, that’s getting easier and easier –
I hear lots of people enjoying themselves…
But also lots of complaints!
(And the forums on Nextdoor and Reddit are even worse.)
It’s like people expect Buc-ee’s to be something that it isn’t.
Buc-ee’s is amazing. Let’s enjoy it for what it is.
And here’s the real struggle…

Intro (continued…)

I expect these issues to get worse as Buc-ee’s rapidly expands.
I mean, we now know where Buc-ee’s is going to build next.
That’s going to multiply the joy…
And also the complaints.
So I’ve put together a handy list of the most ridiculous complaints I’ve heard – and how to address them.

For every Buc-ee’s fan

Because let’s face it –
Life’s too short not to enjoy Buc-ee’s!
This first complaint, by the way, is perhaps the most ridiculous of the bunch…
Shutterstock
“It’s too crowded inside!”

As with all things – if you don’t like how crowded someplace is, consider coming at a different time!
Buc-ee’s is literally open 24/7. You don’t have to come at 5:15 pm along with everyone else.
Some Buc-ee’s get upwards of 4 million visitors a year. There’s going to be a crowd sometimes.
Shutterstock
“The food is too expensive!”

…I don’t know what to tell you.
Inflation is a thing, and honestly Buc-ee’s prices are pretty incredible given all the stuff they offer.
Like, here’s a list of awesome food you can get there for under $4.
Shutterstock
“I hate all the traffic!”

I get this one, especially if you live near a Buc-ee’s.
(This is actually one of the big issues Buc-ee’s is facing as it expands into new cities and states – traffic issues!)
But by the same token – all those cars are stopping so they can spend money at a business that pays sales tax.
They’re helping pay for your government services! (And helping keep your taxes low too.)
Shutterstock
“It’s too big!”

I understand this one, because most people are used to teeny-tiny convenience stores that are a few hundred square feet, while the new Buc-ee’s builds are usually around 74,000 square feet.
(That’s double the size of your typical grocery store.)
By the same token, however, this is how you get all the cool options that Buc-ee’s provides.
And it cuts down on crowding too!
Shutterstock
“There are too many options!”

I get how looking at the wall of beef jerky can be a little overwhelming – there’s a ton of choices!
And also, this is how you get tons of cool flavors of beef jerky like teriyaki, cherry maple, jalapeno honey, hot and spicy, bohemian garlic, mesquite peppered, lemon peppered, sweet and spicy…
Dozens of flavors of fudge…
And so much more.

“It drives local gas stations out of business!”

It may well – because Buc-ee’s is an awesome place to shop, and an awesome place to work.
I mean, their starting wage is literally $18 an hour.
Managers can make $100,000+ annually.
That’s unheard-of in the convenience store business.
So if they drive other places out of business – by forcing them to raise their wages to compete – that’s a win for workers, isn’t it?

“The food isn’t up to my standards.”

Ma’am, Buc-ee’s is a gas station.
A gas station where you can get chopped brisket.
Artisanal jerky.
Kolaches.
If you want a steak, go to a steakhouse. Buc-ee’s ain’t it. (Nor should it be.)

“Why haven’t they built one near me?”

I’ve observed that Buc-ee’s teams have pretty rigorous standards for where they choose to build.
(This is actually one of the reasons it’s so impressive that they’re simultaneously pushing to build an unprecedented THREE new Buc-ee’s in just one state!)
Just because you live next to a highway (or near a city) doesn’t necessarily mean Buc-ee’s is going to build there.
More specifically…

Buc-ee’s locations

What I’ve generally observed is that Buc-ee’s criteria seems to look something like this:
– Highway with tons of traffic
– Between two big destinations
– Find cheap land in a suburb or exurb
– Ideally near a tourist attraction or two.
If you look at most new Buc-ee’s builds, they fit these criteria.

“It takes too much time!”

This is a legitimate complaint!
Buc-ee’s is huge, there’s tons of fun stuff, the kids (and, let’s face it, the adults) love it.
And also – it’s a great opportunity to stretch your legs, get some great food and cool merch…think of it as a fun destination along the way.
So you should build in the time, and recognize that you’ll be there for at least an hour.

“I’m spending too much money!”

Then make a shopping list and stick to it.
You’re an adult.
And again – you can get lots of great stuff at Buc-ee’s for pretty cheap!
