Craving chocolate milk? With this homemade chocolate syrup recipe you can make your family chocolate milk without the junk ingredients!

My son loves sweet treats, especially his raw chocolate milk! We traveled over the holidays to visit my family who live out of state, and our little Bubba was spoiled quite a bit while we vacationed with this drink. He loves his raw milk and usually drinks it just plain, but I purchased an organic chocolate syrup for him so he could have chocolate milk. Needless to say he was addicted to the stuff and didn’t want to drink his milk without it.
Once we came home I decided to make my own homemade chocolate syrup for Bubba. My little man loves this stuff!
Homemade chocolate syrup ingredients + substitutions
- 1 Cup Water
- 2/3 Cup Cocoa Powder
- 1 Cup Sugar (or any sweetener of your choice, such as honey or maple syrup)
- 1 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract
- Pinch of Sea Salt
How to make homemade chocolate syrup
- Using a medium saucepan, heat water and cocoa powder together over medium heat.
- Add sugar and bring the mixture to a boil. Stir the chocolate syrup continually to prevent burning.
- Once the mixture comes to a boil lower your heat to medium-low. Cook the syrup until its slightly thick, usually around 5-8 minutes.
- Stir the vanilla extract and salt into the chocolate syrup and set aside to cool.
- Once cooled, pour the syrup into a storage container (I used a glass pouring jar) and refrigerate.

very delicious recipe
very dilicious recipe
I’ve made this recipe a 4 or 5 times now and love it. It has replaced the “Simple 5” Hershey’s syrup that my picky 4 year old was used to having in her chocolate milk. She likes it just as much. I like it way more – it tastes AMAZING with the coconut sugar, especially when it’s still warm. It takes me back to my childhood and the taste of my mother’s hot fudge pudding cake (made with conventional ingredients). One time I was out of coconut sugar and made it with organic cane sugar. It worked fine but I didn’t think the flavor was as delicious. I use cacao powder instead of cocoa. I have adjusted the recipe to our preferences by using 1 1/2 cups of water so that it pours out easier after being refrigerated. Thanks for the great recipe!
I’m afraid that the sugar is the “junk” ?
Hi there, how long does this keep in the fridge? Can’t wait to try it!
I love this recipe.. I think for me (because I don’t eat sugar) I would substitute 1/2 of honey…
I was thinking the same?
I would replace the cocoa with raw chocolate powder (cacao) because it is more healthy than cocoa. I would use maple syrup or honey instead of coconut sugar, which is no better than cane sugar nutritionally, because fyi, when a coconut tree is used for sugar production, the tree no longer produces coconuts, which have tons of health benefits.
While some of what you say is true…
The part about Cocoa vs Cacao, depends on various factors! 1.: Cocoa, in most cases, goes through a higher temperature processing, but still keeps most of the minerals etc, so healthwise, you won’t see much of a difference regarding that… That being said, they sometimes add Oils, Milk Fats and Sugar, which in that way makes it a bad product, and therefore, when anyone buys Cocoa, they should go for the Dutch-Processed kind!
The part about Coconut Sugar, not being more Nutritional, depends on how you looks at it! Coconut Sugar has a way lower GI than Cane Sugar, Honey and Maple Syrup, and also contains Minerals, and Inulin Fiber, which is what’s causing the lower GI…
It is true, that when Coconut Tree’s, are being used to harvest Coconut Sugar, they are no longer used to produce actual Coconuts, BUT, keep in mind, it is not like there won’t be planted new Tree’s, and it’s not like we’re running out of them!!! The bed you sleep in everyday, is probably also a result, of a Tree being cut down…
Could something else be used instead of the sugar, like stevia or rice malt syrup? Sounds like awesome recipe but too much sugar for my bacterias lol
Of course you could use Stevia 🙂 No need to feed Obesity or Cancer or any of the other lifestyle issues 🙂
Wow!!! I am bad about leaving reviews but I had to on this recipe. We are blown away… I think that this recipe kicks Hershey’s to the curb. I make most things from scratch anyways but this is even better than the store bought stuff… Thanks so much!!!
I am going to make this for my kids. They are addicted to Ovaltine and I would prefer they drank this! Thanks.
Awesome recipes. Looking forward to making chocolate milk once i buy some more coconut sugar.
So simple and delicious!
Thank you for this elegant recipe.
I just made the chocolate milk. It was delicious and both my kids said it was awesome! I used regular sugar because I was a little afraid of using the cocnut sugar, but I’ll try a small batch with that to test it out.
my kid loved it she drank it all. nice descriptive blog. ( I loved it too, and I don’t do sweets!)
How much will it make? I wanted to make sure the container I had was big enough:)
Can you use real cacao instead of cocoa?
You showed the current price of the liberty glass mugs 16.5 oz were selling for $12.00 @ Amazon but when I click on your price of $12.00 it went into amazon for $22.00 what’s the problem between you and amazon?
Hi I was interested in purchasing the glasses for the current price $12, but when I click on it it charges the $22. Is there something I need to do? Thx
Hi Julia, I looked around and I found the cheaper priced jars at $12. You do have to pay $12.99 for shipping though, so they really aren’t cheaper! Here is the link
I made this and devoured it! Thanks!
So happy you all love it as much as my Bubba!
My husband is addicted to chocolate milk. I seeing him squeeze a bottle of Hershey’s into milk. I have everything on hand to make this, and I think I may get stellar wife points! Haha thank you.
Ps. A gallon of raw milk from our local health food store is 15 dollars. Which we just haven’t been able to do. In the mean time we drink full fat organic. Do you have any posts or resources for raw milk such as how to find local sources or save some money? Thank you!
Hi Abbey – Check this site out!

Hi Jessica! I would give it a months time and then judge from there.
I’m sorry, but is anyone really going to have this in their fridge for a month, or longer?? If so, you may need an intervention. 🙂
Also, how much syrup to milk ratio do you use?
Just make the powdered mixture…raw cocoa, sugar cinnamon, nutmeg….keep in a mason jar. When ready to use, use milk or water with coconut cream and van on the stove and 3 heaping tbls of the mixture.
Could I use stevia instead of sugar? Thanks:)
Thanks for another great recipe. I’ve really enjoyed your site. Hoe long do you think this will stay good in the fridge?
The mixture lasts indefinitely. None of the ingredients are perishable. It does not need to be refrigerated and it can last for years.
