Why Choose Natural Ingredients for Your Mascara?
While it is a personal choice, some prefer to avoid the various chemical ingredients found in mascara, particularly if they have sensitive skin or eyes. Making your own mascara is a much better choice to steer clear of such ingredients.
Choosing the Right Ingredients for Your Homemade Mascara
To make your own black/ super dark brown mascara, you will need:
- Black cacao powder or activated charcoal
- Bentonite clay
- Castor oil
- Aloe vera gel
- Beeswax
- A small, shallow dish or container
Beeswax and clay help the mascara to not smudge and clump. Beeswax has a natural substance called propolis, which protects against bacteria, fungi, and viruses, promoting healthier lashes. The clay, such as bentonite, white, green, or pink, helps absorb excess oils and prevents smudging. Bentonite clay is especially good for cleansing and purifying, removing impurities from the mascara. Castor oil is a natural hair growth remedy, so its inclusion should help to give you longer lashes over time!
Step-by-Step Guide: Creating Your Own Mascara at Home
½ teaspoon grated beeswax
½ teaspoon castor oil
¼ teaspoon pure aloe vera gel
¼ teaspoon black or dark cacao powder or activated charcoal.
¼ teaspoon bentonite clay
Step 1: Add the grated beeswax, castor oil, and aloe vera gel to a small saucepan. I used a Turkish coffee pot.

Step 3: Working quickly, add the cacao powder and the bentonite clay and stir until combined. If the mixture is too dry, add a few drops more castor oil.

Step 4: Place into a shallow container or a mascara tube if you wish. I don’t use a mascara tube as it is more difficult to adjust the consistency if it dries out over time.

Step 5: Roll your mascara brush in the mascara and wipe off the excess before applying.

How to Store and Use Your Homemade Mascara
Store the mascara in a cool, dark place. This mascara contains ingredients with a long shelf life, and when kept in a tightly secured container, it can last up to 6 months. You may need to pop it back on the stove and add some more oil, as it will dry out over time.
Customizing Your Homemade Mascara
Adjusting Color
– For brown mascara, use regular cocoa powder instead of black.
– For pure black mascara, use activated charcoal instead of black cacao powder.
Adjusting Mascara Consistency
– If the mascara is too thick, gradually add more aloe or oils in small amounts until the desired consistency is achieved.
– If the mascara is too thin, add a small amount of clay or beeswax at a time until the desired thickness is reached.
Tips and Troubleshooting
Transferring the Mascara
– Pouring the mascara into the tube can be challenging due to its thickness, which is why I just keep mine in a small container and coat the mascara wand in it when I need to use it.
Setting and Removal
– To help keep everything in place, follow up with a setting spray. This mascara will not hold as well as store-bought varieties, so a setting spray is highly recommended for longevity.
– To remove the mascara, use an oil based makeup remover.

FAQs
Yes, homemade mascara is generally safe as long as you use non-toxic, skin-safe ingredients. However, always do a patch test to check for allergic reactions.
While homemade mascara can darken and lengthen lashes, it unfortunately may not offer the same volume or staying power as commercial mascaras.
The cost-effectiveness of homemade mascara depends on the price of the ingredients you use. In general, making your own mascara can be cheaper than buying high-end brands.
As homemade mascara lacks certain ingredients found in commercial mascaras, it might not be as smudge-proof or resistant to flaking. However, this can vary based on the recipe used.
