Intro

Did you know Whataburger turns 75 this year?
That’s right – the upstart burger chain, which is rapidly expanding into new US markets (are any of them near you?), is now three-quarters of a century old!
And to celebrate, Whataburger is doing some pretty special stuff…

Two foods back from the vault

More specifically, they’ve brought back two long-time fan favorites that have been locked up in the “vault” – aka discontinued from the menu – for some time.
(Hey Whataburger, if you want more ideas for great items to bring back, I’ve got a few!)
And on January 7th, they’ll begin their 75th anniversary celebration by bringing back the Chicken Fajita Taco and the Monterey Melt. (In addition to introducing some new menu items as well.)
Let’s dive in on these delicious foods…

Chicken fajita taco

The chicken fajita taco was originally introduced all the way back in February of 2012.
It was simple and delicious then, and I’m confident it will be now, as well.
– Grilled chicken breast
– Onions, poblano, and red peppers
– All in a soft flour tortilla
Whataburger describes it as “basically a fiesta in every bite,” and I have to agree.
But really that’s just the prelude to the big one…the Monterey Melt.

Monterey Melt

The Monterey Melt is a longtime fan favorite that was originally introduced in 2013.
It’s bounced around on and off the menu since then, with its most recent appearance being back in 2022.
Fortunately, thanks in no small part to the extensive efforts of a devoted group of fans, it’s back again on January 7th!

Everything about the burger

The Monterey Melt’s ingredients include:
– Two beef patties
– Monterey Jack and American cheese
– Grilled onions and peppers
– Jalapeno Ranch sauce
If you haven’t had it before, I highly recommend – its flavor profile is cheesy and indulgent with a good kick of heat from the peppers and the ranch sauce.
It’s extremely satisfying in a way that few other burgers can match.

On to the new stuff

Ok, so that’s the full deal on the older dishes coming back – but Whataburger is also adding two new menu items to celebrate its 75th:
– Mexican Hot Chocolate coffee (iced and hot)
– Mexican Hot Chocolate shake
Let’s dive right in!

The flavors

The Mexican hot chocolate concept is basically a combination of indulgent chocolate and cinnamon – so you get that hint of heat you’re used to from Mexican hot chocolate, but in this really beautiful complement to the chocolate.
Basically, I’m expecting both of these drinks to be very popular, especially the shake (which will naturally marry the spice to extra sweetness and creaminess from the ice cream).
Get excited!

More to come

Whataburger’s actual birthday is on August 8th, so there’s plenty of time left for celebration – and they’ve already indicated that they plan to reach back into the “WhataVault” to find more traditional fan favorites to bring back.
So lots more to come here.
But of course that brings us to a really important question:
