This homemade protein coffee recipe is a great way to start your day and get additional protein into your diet! In this article I share three different ways to make protein coffee with protein powder, protein shakes, or collagen powder. You can make this recipe with iced or hot coffee and use regular milk or plant based milks like coconut or oat milk.
If you’re looking for an easy way to increase your protein intake, then protein coffee is a great option! Spice up your morning coffee with protein powder, collagen peptides, or your favorite pre-made protein shake. There are many ways to make protein coffee, and below I share some of my favorite methods. Each recipe has various grams of protein, depending on what type of protein you use, but each recipe has at least 10 grams of protein.
How to Make Protein Coffee
Protein Powder Recipe
For this recipe you will need one cup of dairy or non-dairy milk of choice (I used unsweetened almond milk) and a scoop of protein powder (vanilla or chocolate protein powder work well). I tested this recipe with both whey protein powder and pea protein powder.
Add the milk and powder to a high speed blender and blend until the powder is combined.
Iced Protein Coffee: Fill your glass with ice and pour a cup of cold brew coffee over the ice and top with the blended protein milk. Add a pump of your favorite syrup, sugar free syrup or liquid stevia and enjoy!
Hot Coffee: Warm the protein milk in a saucepan or warming frother (I use this one) and pour over a cup of hot coffee. Sweeten to taste and enjoy!
Collagen Powder Recipe
Collagen peptides are another great way to get extra protein! The peptides dissolve in both hot and cold liquid, which makes it easy to add to recipes.
Iced Coffee: Mix the collagen powder with your cold brew coffee. Use a blender stick or frother to mix the collagen into the coffee. Pour the coffee over ice and top with your favorite creamer and sweetener.
Hot Coffee: Brew your coffee and add the collagen to the coffee and stir. Top with your favorite creamer and sweetener and enjoy.
Protein Shake Recipe
You can use your favorite prepared protein shake to make delicious protein coffee. This method is great for busy mornings!
Iced Coffee: Pour your protein shake over a large mason jar filled with ice and top with cold brew coffee. I usually don’t add sweetener since most protein shakes are sweet enough on their own, but may add a liquid sweetener like simple syrup, maple syrup or liquid stevia to sweeten to your taste.
Hot Protein Coffee: Warm the protein shake in a small saucepan or in a warming frother. Brew a cup of coffee and top with the warmed protein shake. Depending on the size of your mug, you may have leftover protein shake. Refrigerate and leftover and use the next day.
Blended Protein Coffee
There are two ways to make a blended coffee drink. One is by freezing a protein shake in ice cube trays, or freezing coffee in ice cube trays. Both work great, so make this blended drink however you like.
Pour your brewed coffee or favorite protein shake into an ice cube tray and freeze overnight. You can also use protein milk from the protein powder recipe to make ice cubes too!
If using frozen protein ice cubes, add the cubes to a blender and cover with 1-2 cups of cold brew coffee. Blend on high until the drink resembles a frappuccino texture and pour the blended coffee into a large serving cup or mason jar. Top with syrups and whipped cream if you like and enjoy!

FAQ
What type of coffee should I use to make protein coffee?
Use your favorite coffee for these recipes! I use a mix of fresh brewed, cold brew, instant coffee, and nesspresso, and enjoy using them all in these recipes.
What is the best protein powder to use?
I’ve used a lot of different protein powders and I honestly can’t recommend one over another. I suggest you use your favorite protein powder, one that you enjoy the taste and texture of. I usually go for vegan protein powder to up my plant protein, but some prefer whey protein.
How do I flavor my protein coffee?
You can change up the flavor of your protein coffee by adding ingredients like cocoa powder (mocha flavor), peanut butter, or caramel syrup. Also experiment with liquid syrups like vanilla, peppermint, caramel, hazelnut or brown sugar! Use sugar-free syrups if you want to keep your sugar intake down.
What kind of cold brew coffee do you use?
I make my own cold brew coffee! I use this cold brew press and add 6 ounces of course ground coffee with 6 cups of water. Let the coffee brew for 12-24 hours and you have a batch of great homemade cold brew coffee!
