If you’re looking for a way to spice up your rice, this easy turmeric rice recipe is perfect. It’s simple to make yet has aromatic flavors from the coconut and turmeric. This rice tastes excellent served alone or as a an side with tasty dishes like coconut chicken!
How To Make Turmeric Rice (aka Golden Rice)
For this recipe, you will need white rice, ground turmeric powder, coconut oil, diced onion, minced garlic cloves, vegetable broth, salt, and pepper. Below I share how to make this rice on the stove top and instant pot!
Rinse the uncooked rice with cold water before you begin.
In a large skillet, heat the coconut oil over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and cook until tender and translucent.
Add the rice and turmeric. Stir well and allow the rice to cook in the oil for about a minute.
Next, add the broth, salt and black pepper. Bring to a boil.
Once the broth begins to boil, reduce to heat and simmer the turmeric rice for 15-20 minutes or until the liquid absorbs into the rice.
Remove the rice from the heat and allow it to cool for 5-7 minutes.
Serve warm with a squeeze of lemon juice and fresh herbs like parlay or cilantro. Leftover rice can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Pressure Cooker Directions
This simple turmeric rice can easily be made in an instant pot! Here’s how I make it:
- Press the sauté button on the instant pot and add the coconut oil to the bottom of the pot.
- Add the garlic and onion and sauté for 3-5 minutes.
- Add in the rinsed rice and turmeric and stir.
- Then pour in the salt, pepper, and broth.
- Cook on high pressure for 3 minutes.
- All the natural pressure to release. This will take about 10 minutes for one cup of rice.
- Remove the rice from the pot to avoid it sticking. Serve immediately and enjoy!
Ingredients & Substitutes
- Coconut Oil: You can substitute butter, ghee, or olive oil for the coconut oil. You can also use refined coconut oil, which has many of the benefits of coconut but without the intense coconut flavor.
- White Rice: I’ve only tested this recipe with white basmati rice, but other rice, such as jasmine rice and brown rice, may work in its place.
- Broth: I used vegetable stock to make this side dish vegetarian, but you may use chicken broth instead.
- Ground Turmeric: Since this recipe is turmeric rice, we will not substitute turmeric for another spice. You can, however, use fresh turmeric instead. You will need to grate the turmeric root and add it in with the garlic and onion.
- Optional Seasonings: Red pepper flakes, ground ginger, and bay leaf are great additions to this rice recipe.

What To Serve with Turmeric Rice
This rice is an easy side dish for many main dish recipes. Below are some of my favorite options:

- Weeknight Curried Chicken Meatballs: These spicy meatballs are delicious and pair well with this rice!
- Coconut Milk Chicken with Lime: This simple dish, which can be made in the crockpot, is warm and comforting. It is served well with rice and is excellent over turmeric rice.
