Unicorn Body Butter – wait what?
Unicorns are the fantasy of the young and young-at-heart. Beautiful, colorful horses with swirled horns and impressive wings living in a land of rainbows and glittering waterfalls. Countless stories and shows help bring the enchanting world of unicorns to life, as well as brightly hued home and beauty products. One such beauty product you can make yourself is Homemade Unicorn Body Butter!
Previously, unicorn body butter had a viral moment when a single brand became popular for its colorful, whirled lotion. Instead of paying into the hype, you can make your own and customize it as you wish! After creating a simple base recipe, you can add in your own blend of essential oils for a unique scent. You can also control the vibrancy of the colors by adding more mica powder. Or even change the colors altogether!
Mica powder creates a bright, kaleidoscopic Homemade Unicorn Body Butter. Mica is a natural mineral that is used in cosmetics to make eyeshadows, lipsticks, or other blends requiring color. In this recipe, we use four different colors of mica powder to design a unicorn-like shimmer. Use lavishly on the body, but lightly on your face. A little bit goes a long way!
Ingredients for Homemade Unicorn Body Butter
Coconut Oil – Coconut oil is our choice for body butter bases. It has high levels of vitamins and antioxidants which are extremely beneficial for skin health. It has a light coconut scent and absorbs beautifully.
Shea or Mango Butter – Both shea and mango butter are powerful moisturizers. They each hold anti-inflammatory abilities and work to smooth scrapes and wrinkles. Shea butter has a slightly nutty scent, while mango butter has almost no scent. Use what you have or what you personally prefer.
Vitamin E Oil – Vitamin E oil is added to this recipe for an extra boost of hydration. It also helps minimize skin irritation and the appearance of scars. It is an excellent supplement to any beauty regime.
Essential Oils (optional) – Essential oils can be used in this recipe to give a fairy tale aroma to the body butter. Choose light, uplifting scents like lemon, jasmine, pineapple, or vanilla. Just think of what a unicorn might smell like – sweet, floral, and fruity!
Mica Powder (four colors) – Mica powder is derived from a natural mineral which is non-toxic and non-irritating. Start with 1/4 teaspoon of color, mix thoroughly, then add more if desired. The body butter can be as vivid as you want!
How to Make Homemade Unicorn Body Butter
Step One: Melt the coconut oil and shea or mango butter in a double boiler over low heat.
Step Two: Once melted, remove from heat and let cool until semi-solid, but still soft, (~2 hours). Move to the fridge to hasten the process.
Step Four: When semi-solid, use a standing or handheld mixer with whisk attachments to whip the mixture into a fluffy cream, approximately 2 minutes.
Step Five: Add the vitamin E oil and essential oils (if using). Whisk a few times more to incorporate.
Step Six: Divide equally into four separate bowls. Add 1/4 teaspoon of colored mica powder, one color in each bowl. Mix with separate spoons until the powder is fully incorporated.
Step Six: Prepare a piping bag with a circle or flower-shaped tip. Scoop each portion of body butter into the piping bag. Swirl into an airtight jar.
Store in a cool, dry place up to six months. Smooth onto skin daily for glittery, moisturizing magic!
FAQ
Melt coconut oil and either mango or shea butter in a double boiler. Once melted, cool until semi-solid. Add vitamin E oil and optional essential oils, and whip into a fluffy cream. Separate equally into three bowls and add appropriate colors to each. Mix the colors thoroughly, then scoop into a piping bag and swirl into an airtight jar.
This Homemade Unicorn Body Butter will smell slightly like coconut and mango (if using mango butter). If adding essential oil, choose light, uplifting scents like lemon, jasmine, pineapple, or vanilla – or whatever you think a unicorn would smell like!
When stored an airtight jar in a cool, dry place, homemade unicorn body butter can last up to six months. If it begins to smell soured or mold grows on the inside, stop use and dispose immediately.
Tips
After you mix the mica powder into the separate portions of body butter, place the bowls into the fridge for 5 minutes to keep the mixtures from being too runny when you transfer to a piping bag.
If you don’t have a piping bag, use a large plastic freezer bag and cut one corner to act as the piping spout.
When piping, your hand will naturally warm the body butter causing the top portion to melt. Pipe half the lotion into the jar, then place the piping bag in the fridge for 5-10 minutes so the melted bit can firm up again before finishing.
If piping seems intimidating, you can also scoop each color separately into the jar to create puffy layers that look just as cool!
