What are Vegan Waffles, anyway?
A vegan diet is one in which animal products are avoided, such as meat, eggs, and dairy. Though seemingly intimidating at first, veganism is an easy and lovely diet to follow. Thanks to modern day alternatives, vegans can enjoy all the same foods that non-vegans do, including waffles!
These Vegan Almond Flour Waffles are fluffy, tasty and a must-have for weekend brunch! Those with gluten intolerance will be happy to indulge, as well, since this recipe is totally gluten-free. The combination of almond flour and gluten-free all purpose flour add delicious flavor and texture to these waffles.
Vegan Almond Flour Waffles are best enjoyed the same day, covered with maple syrup and fresh berries. An oat milk latte (or a mimosa!) is the best accompanying beverage. We used a mini waffle maker which cooks up the cutest breakfast, but feel free to try with a larger waffle maker – just increase the amount of batter you scoop in. Then whip these waffles up and savor a meal with no dairy, no gluten, and no guilt!
Ingredients for the Vegan Almond Flour Waffles
Dry Ingredients
Almond Flour – Almond flour has a subtle nutty taste and is naturally gluten-free. It gives the waffles a chewy texture and moist interior.
Gluten-Free All Purpose Flour – Since almond flour lacks gluten’s binding abilities, it needs a secondary flour to help combine all the ingredients together. We chose gluten-free all purpose flour to keep the recipe gluten-free. But, if you’re not concerned with gluten, regular all-purpose would work, as well.
Baking Powder – Baking powder is the leavening agent that allows the waffles to rise when cooking in the waffle maker, giving them fluff!
Salt – We use pink Himalayan salt for its lower sodium content and slightly sweeter flavor profile.
Wet Ingredients
Milk, non-dairy – To ensure this recipe is vegan, use a non-dairy milk like oat, almond, or coconut. Start with 1 cup of milk at first, then add more by the 1/4 cup if the batter seems too thick.
Maple Syrup – Maple syrup is the best sweetener both inside and outside of these waffles!
Butter, non-dairy – Just like the milk, make sure you are using a non-dairy butter to keep this recipe vegan. Nowadays, there are plenty of brands to choose from at the store.
Vanilla Extract – Vanilla extract or vanilla bean paste will give these waffles a yummy, floral flavor which compliments the nuttiness of the flours.
